Event: Old Town Alexandria Tree Lighting Friday, November 27

This is a great, free event for the day after Thanksgiving, and I recommend this as a more enjoyable and accessible alternative to the lighting ceremony of the National Christmas tree in downtown DC.

Gather your family and head down to Old Town Alexandria in Virginia for their tree lighting in the Market Square on 301 King Street.

7:00 p.m. Town Crier announces the Mayor. Welcome from Mayor William D. Euille. Introduction of City Officials.

7:05 p.m. Mayor announces lighting of the tree.

7:10 p.m. Santa’s Frosty’s Follies performance by The Metropolitan Fine Arts Center.

7:30 p.m. Santa Claus arrives! Children are invited to visit Santaon the stage. Please enter the stage on the west side and exit on the east side. Candy canes are distributed to the children affer seeing Santa.

Caroling and Sing-Along: everyone is invited to participate in a community sing-along following the tree-lighting.

After the ceremony, take some time to stroll the specially lit and decorated streets of Old Town.  If you’re ready for dinner, I recommend making reservations at The Chart House (for a splurge) or grabbing a quick bite at La Madeleine (which is budget-friendly), both of which are nearby and are kid-friendly.  A few blocks down, the Flying Fish is also a great place to check out (more for adults than kids), either for dinner upstairs or for drinks and appetizers in their smokey-but-cool bar downstairs.
