Cool Yule Cinema: Jack Benny Goes Christmas Shopping

December 17, 2014

I’ve listened to Jack Benny radio programs for years, but I never knew he had a TV show! It’s very similar in format to the radio program. A fascinating glimpse into the past.

Cool Yule Cinema: A Christmas Carol

December 10, 2014

There are so many versions of A Christmas Carol but Alastair Sim comes across as an ultimately credible, pitiless miser.

Cool Yule Cinema: Holiday in Handcuffs

December 3, 2014

You know what the true spirit of the holidays is? Awkward family gatherings.

I love this whack-a-doodle 2007 flick. Enjoy!

Come back next Wednesday for another Cool Yule Cinema classic.

Cool Yule Cinema: Ernest Saves Christmas

December 3, 2014

Home Alone. I’ve never seen it, and I never will watch it. No. Not ever. But Ernest Saves Christmas is another matter.  Enjoy!

Cool Yule Cinema: 2nd Day of Christmas

November 26, 2014

I started watching this and thought: whaaat? Larceny is not very Christmas-y!

And then I got hooked. Mark Ruffalo is really funny in this.

I think you will enjoy this rather untypical Christmas movie.

Come back next Wednesday for another great Cool Yule classic!

Cool Yule Cinema: Holiday Affair

November 19, 2014

Here’s one maybe you haven’t seen before — Robert Mitchum and Janet Leigh star in “Holiday Affair,” a 1949 romance that features an adorable child actor and lots of great lines.

I think you’ll enjoy this RKO film. Visit Cool Yule each Wednesday for another Christmas-themed movie.

National Christmas Tree Lighting live online today

December 6, 2013
Crowds on the Ellipse in Washington, D.C., wat...

Crowds on the Ellipse in Washington, D.C., watch the annual lighting of the National Christmas Tree, attended by President George W. Bush and Laura Bush, Thursday evening, Dec. 7, 2006, during the 2006 Christmas Pageant of Peace. White House photo by Paul Morse. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

The 91st Annual National Christmas Tree Lighting will take place on the Ellipse in front of the White House on Friday, December 6, 2013 starting at 4:30pm ET. President Obama and the First Lady will light the tree. Featured performers include Aretha Franklin and Mariah Carey, among many others.

Should you go in person? If you have VIP tickets, yes. If you don’t have tickets, no! It will be very hard to see anything, the crowds and traffic will not make you feel very Christmas-y, and on top of that, the forecast is for rain.

My Cool Yule Tip: watch it live online, instead:

Or watch it on public television, where the program will be aired throughout December.

Oh, and this is new: the tree itself has a Twitter profile! Follow @theNationalTree for fun updates.
